The Smart Band Compact is a composite non-metallic banding system that is highly suited to applications that require long-term clamping in the subsea environment. Capable of offering high strength, and consistent band retention, and also suitable for projects exhibiting degrees of hydrostatic compression. Alongside the Compact Strap, HCL manufacture and supply a range of manual & automatic installation tools suited to either Diver or Topside installation.
For over 20 years HCL's Smart Band product range has been used extensively in the Subsea environment. Applications are limitless but typical or common uses are as follows:
A high strength, polymer composite, fixed length strap, incorporating Glass Fibre reinforced yarn and an overmoulded buckle, available in a variety of widths, lengths and materials to suit the project specifications. Supplied in individual coiled units for ease of mobilisation.
A range of bespoke and standard polyurethane or injection moulded components which allow the bracketing or clamping of cables, sensors, Pipelines, conduits, ICCP anodes or any other shape to the subsea structure, riser or umbilical. These components act as an interface and are used in conjunction with the Smart Band Compact. Saddles can be designed to meet client requirements.
The 3000 Pneumatic Combination Air Tool tensions and trims the polymer strap. This quiet, reliable and durable tool offers significant benefits including, reduced installation time on the vessel and consistent strap retention for the duration of any project.
Combining efficiencies in installation times, cost savings on materials & mobilisation can provide substantial cost benefits throughout the supply chain and the total cost of deployment.
With the 3000 Tool being able to impart consistent retention into the Smart Band over tens of 1000’s of cycles, HCL’s Smart Band system provides the confidence required for critical long term Subsea installations.
Due to the nature of the materials our bands are manufactured from, they can tolerate a degree of expansion or contraction of the clamped substrate due to either hydrostatic compression or thermal expansion.
All Polymers used in the HCL’s components are tough and durable and have a long and certified track record in the Offshore & Subsea environment, full technical information can be viewed in the Smart Band Technical Booklet.
Our range of polymer composite banding and saddles, utilising PA12, PPS and Polyurethane materials are completely non-metallic. These are non-magnetic, corrosion free and the PPS material can offer higher temperature resistance than normal polymers.
We work with clients from the start to provide a full solution from the start to the end of each project. We will also work closely with other partners and contractors connected to the project on the client’s behalf. So you can be sure of a successfully planned and executed project working with HCL.

Smart Band Compact was selected for use by Lankhorst to install their highly engineered Piggy Back Block for the KG-D6 R-Cluster, Installation depth was a record 1925m, and installed was carried out by Allseas & McDermott. HCL’s 3000 type pneumatic tools were used for installation.
Smart Band Compact and a bespoke PU saddle were supplied to clamp multiple power cables to Jacket Legs to arrest cable abrasion. Work was carried out by saturation Divers using the 1000 & 2000 Manual Tools.
Smart Band 32mm Compact Strap was used to install the VIV strakes on the Shell Appomattox project in the Gulf of Mexico. HCL’s 3000 type pneumatic tools were used for installation.
Smart Band 32mm Compact and a bespoke capped PU saddle were supplied to clamp wire rope (ballast) to thermoplastic composite pipe (TCP). HCL’s 3000 type pneumatic tools were used for installation and deployment was conducted from a flat barge.
Smart Band Compact and bespoke PU saddles were used to clamp instrumentation to riser system
19mm Smart Band Compact and bespoke PU saddles were used to attach sensors monitoring anchor chain dynamics.
